In October 2020, based on the new assessment from The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration announced that bamboo as an additive in plastic food contact materials is not legal. EFSA has stated that bamboo does not fall under the entry "Wood" on the EU positive list of authorised ingredients in plastics. This assessment means that bamboo has never been legal to use as an additive in plastic within EU. Concern has been raised about the migration of problematic chemicals (formaldehyde and melamine) in plastic food contact materials containing bamboo-based additives.
Consequently, Sebra has stopped our production and import of melamine plastic containing bamboo-based additives and our B2B sales activities. We follow this matter closely and have made this information page to help and guide you as an end-consumer.
As the EU positive list of authorized ingredients in plastics has not been changed, an overall transition period or general European bamboo melamine recall are not likely to be made. Therefor the way of handling bamboo melamine already sold will differ from country to country.
Bamboo melamine must be used correctly - this really applies to all melamine products. Melamine products, including bamboo melamine, are not suitable for microwave oven use or for storing foods at temperatures above 70° C. Sebra's melamine and bamboo melamine is dishwasher safe - we recommend a maximum of 65° C degrees in the upper basket.
Only use the product under the supervision of an adult. Check the product each time before use. Discard at first sign of damage or wear. Bamboo melamine products may break if dropped. Always check the temperature of the food before serving.
If you feel unsafe with one of our bamboo melamine products, stop using it. You can contact the shop where the product was purchased and depending on the national instructions or initiatives the retailer will try to guide and help you.
